A SENSE OF PRIDE

NSU Art Museum is committed to continuously expanding its exhibitions, collection, and education outreach programs to better address the needs of Broward County’s diverse population, which includes the largest number of same-sex couples/households in the state of Florida. In 2018, we established the A Sense of Pride initiative to respond to issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community and provide free workshops and programming that foster inclusion, acceptance and understanding. Using art as a catalyst, the program works to raise awareness among all populations in Broward of the social and political challenges of LGBTQ+ community, especially those in its vulnerable teen and senior populations.

Keith Haring and the 80’s East Village Art Scene

Join us as we travel back in time to the 1980s and traverse Manhattan’s East Village, the one-time hub of the New York art world that saw Keith Haring at its epicenter. In this discussion, we explore the many artists, creative personalities and cultural locales that populated this zeitgeist and reveal how Haring’s organization of exhibitions, parties, pop-up shops, activism and protests made this a moment of global and historic significance.

Visual Activists: American Art and the AIDS Crisis

New York artists Roberto Juarez and Kia LaBeija join Alex Fialho, programs director of Visual AIDS, New York, and Requel Lopes, director of the World AIDS Museum and Education Center, Wilton Manors, for a discussion on the activist role of LGBTQ+ artists in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis from the 1980s to today.

New Identities: Queer Black and Latinx Artists in America

South Florida-based GeoVanna Gonzalez, Najja Moon and Roberto Navarrete, and New York and Mexico-City based Naima Green, artists who identify as queer individuals of color in America, discuss issues of identity, representation, and race as they pertain to their LGBTQ+ communities and experiences.
