Introduction to the Collection
NSU Art Museum’s permanent collection contains more than 7,500 works, including the most celebrated and largest holdings in America by the post-war, avant-garde European Cobra artists, and the largest collection anywhere of works and archival materials by American painter William J. Glackens and his circle, including John Sloan, George Bellows, Maurice Prendergast, and Glackens’ wife Edith Dimock.
The museum recently received a significant promised gift of 100 works from the highly regarded contemporary art collection of David Horvitz and Francie Bishop Good. With an emphasis on the work of multi-cultural and women artists, this collection provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary art and includes numerous pivotal works in the artists’ careers. Among the artists represented are: Cecily Brown, Tracey Emin, Teresita Fernández, Nan Goldin, Barbara Kruger, Ana Mendieta, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman, Amy Sillman, Lorna Simpson, Kiki Smith, Mickalene Thomas, and Kara Walker.
The museum’s extensive collection of Latin American and Cuban modern and contemporary art includes the important collection of works promised to the museum by Stanley and Pearl Goodman, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Wifredo Lam, Leonora Carrington, José Clemente Orozco, Joaquin Torres-Garcia, among others.
Key mid-twentieth century New York School artists are represented by the work of, among others, Philip Guston, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Frank Stella. Its holdings also include a significant collection of African and Oceanic Tribal Arts and art of the Americas.

The William J. Glackens Research Collection and Study Center
The William J. Glackens Research Collection and Study Center is the central repository for all current and future Glackens materials owned by the Museum, establishing it as a central hub for Glackens scholarship. Along with the museum’s current holdings of art works, a wealth of archival materials relating to Glackens will be housed in the Research Collection and Study Center: seventy-seven of his sketchbooks; more than one thousand photographs spanning his life, institutional records, correspondence, exhibition reviews, and unpublished research.
The William J. Glackens Study Center includes an online component easily and broadly accessible to scholars, educators, students, and the general public. The website features a digital collection of artworks, including comprehensive information about the art, an online search aid, links to other relevant institutional websites, downloadable teacher curriculum packets, family guides, podcasts, and smart-phone applications. QRL codes will link to Glackens works on view at the museum and related online materials. To create the Study Center the museum is extending the period room where visitors can relax and reflect as they explore books and videos on Glackens and associated artists and peruse reproductions of key documents. Electronic tablets that mimic the look of dog-eared sketchbooks and old photo albums allow visitors to enjoy digital reproductions of the artist’s drawings and Glackens family photographs.
