At-Home Art Activity
Jen Stark was born in Miami, Florida in 1983 and received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005, majoring in fibers with a minor in animation. Her artwork mimics intricate patterns and colors found in nature while exploring ideas of replication and infinity. Although Stark is most recognized for her paper sculptures, she has explored a variety of media including wood, metal, paint, plexi and animation. Stark has exhibited globally with major shows in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Thailand and Canada. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
Materials
- Paper Bookmark (Cut down card stock to 2’’ by 7’’)
- Drawing Materials (Markers, Crayons, etc)
Art Vocabulary
- Graffiti – Drawings, writings, or symbols painted or scratched on public surfaces, often created illegally.
- Mural – A large painting or artwork created directly on a wall or ceiling, usually with permission.
- Street Art – Visual art created in public locations, often meant to make a social or political statement
- Tag – A graffiti writer’s personal signature or nickname, usually done quickly with spray paint or marker
- Public Art – Artworks displayed in public areas, typically sanctioned by a city or organization.

Art Activity
Instructions
Step 1
Your materials are: paper bookmark (cut down card stock to 2’’ by 7’’), drawing materials (markers, crayons, etc)
Step 2
Use a pencil to write your name
Step 3
Use some graffiti tips worksheets to transform your name. (Use Google to find some free resources online, just search “Graffiti Instructions”)
Step 4
Try adding a drop shadow, or thick black line along one side of each letter to emphasis your name.
Step 5
Color in your graffiti name and you’re finished! Here is your Graffiti Bookmark
