In Motion: A Special Screening of Short Films by Close to Home Exhibiting Artists
Join NSU Art Museum for a special screening of short films by artists Josh Aronson, Richard Moreno, Reginald O’Neal, and Roscoè B. Thické III in conjunction with the exhibition Close to Home. The screening expands the exhibition’s exploration of community, belonging, and the many ways we experience home, offering distinct perspectives on themes of family, friendship, cultural identity, memory, and shared histories.
This screening brings together works that examine how relationships shape our sense of self and how home exists not only as a physical place, but also as an emotional and communal space. These films provide opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and connection, inviting audiences to engage in meaningful conversations about identity, care, and the communities that sustain us. NSU Art Museum invites you to join us for an evening of experimental and independent film as we consider what it means to feel close to home.

Film for Boys (2025)

Film for Boys extends Josh Aronson’s Florida Boys into moving image, translating the project’s staged portraits of young men in Florida’s landscapes into a brief, atmospheric video installation. Originally presented as a multi-channel work of Super 8 film transferred to video, the piece lingers on faces, gestures, water, foliage, and light, creating a meditative portrait of boyhood, intimacy, and belonging. Rather than following a linear narrative, the film unfolds as a sequence of fragments—part memory, part dream—where young men appear suspended between performance and private reflection.

At the intersection of his grandmother’s death and the redevelopment of the public housing project his family has lived in for generations, artist, community advocate and father of three, Roscoè B. Thické III reflects on his childhood in the Pork n’ Beans projects and the influences behind his work.

In STASIS, Miami-based artist Richard Moreno captures the evolution of his monumental installation through a short film that follows a hand-built canoe that once traveled Biscayne Bay —before being rendered gloriously non-functional and suspended upside down as a massive amplifier sculpture. Blending documentation with performance, the film reflects a darkly communal ritual around risk, migration, distortion, and faith in one another’s DIY making.

Where We Fell in Love (2025)

Artist Reginald O’Neal’s childhood home in the historically Black neighborhood of Overtown—specifically, the Rainbow Village housing development—is being torn down to make way for something new. Painting from a place deeply connected to his roots while simultaneously navigating an art world on shifting ground, O’Neal’s work reminds us that we are all, in very different ways, grappling with change and uncertainty.
