May 11 at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

This discussion will explore representation and meaning in African art forms as they relate to peacebuilding and social harmony.

Ismael Muvingi is associate professor of conflict analysis and African studies at Nova Southeastern University. During Zimbabwe’s war for liberation from colonial rule, he worked in social justice, going into the war zones to investigate atrocities against unarmed civilians. He has practiced law in both the private and public sectors and has worked as a legislative advocacy campaign manager on conflict resolution and HIV/ AIDS issues in Africa. His research interests include transitional justice and the decolonization of knowledge with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.

Selections from NSU Art Museum’s extensive collection of African art are currently on view in the exhibition Remember to React.
