(Fort Lauderdale, FL) – NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale announces the publication of the catalogue, From Within and Without: A History of Haitian Photography.

The 96-page illustrated publication includes essays by distinguished scholars, writers and artists whose unique perspectives illuminate the complex influences that shaped Haiti’s people, history, culture and politics. The book accompanies NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s exhibition From Within and Without: The History of Haitian Photography, which is on view through October 4, 2015, and is the first exhibition to comprehensively explore the history of photography in Haiti from the mid-nineteenth century to 2012. It also documents the exhibition’s unique installation designed by Haitian-American artist Edouard Duval-Carrié, who is the exhibition’s curator.

The catalogue’s contributors are: Edouard Duval-Carrié, Emilie Boone, Donald Consentino, Edwidge Danticat, Laurent Dubois, Kimberly Green, Margaret Mitchell Armand, Alfredo Rivera, Maggie Steber and Edward Sullivan. It is published by NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and edited by Barbara Buhler Lynes, the museum’s Sunny Kaufman Senior Curator, and includes a foreword by Bonnie Clearwater, NSU Art Museum Director and Chief Curator. The catalogue is available for $35 from the NSU Art Museum Store and from Amazon.com.

In commemoration of the book’s publication, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will host a book signing on Saturday, September 12 at 3 pm. The event is free with museum admission and immediately follows a lecture at 2 pm by Laurent Dubois, Director of Duke University’s Forum for Scholars and Publics, whose most recent book is titled Haiti: The Aftershocks of History.
